How to calibrate a hygrometer?

If you have an analog hygrometer, you want to make sure it is as accurate as possible for the best results and use. To achieve this, there is a simple calibration test you can follow on your own to achieve maximum accuracy called the salt test. The best part is, it only takes a few steps.

But WAIT! Why are you bothering with this time-consuming test when you can purchase a digital hygrometer that never has to be calibrated, like the TP50

Hygrometer Salt Test

You will need some supplies first:

  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • Distilled water
  • Zip lock bag
  • Hygrometer that can be calibrated

Once you have all these supplies, you are ready to go. The whole process will take less than a minute to set up, but you must wait 12 hours for results!

  1. Place your 2 teaspoons of salt into a small dish/bowl (some use a container cap of some sort)
  2. Dampen the salt with the distilled water, do not put more than a few drops onto the salt, as you do not want it to dissolve.
  3. Place your hygrometer and salt into the plastic bag, and make sure it is sealed shut
  4. After 12 hours, if the hygrometer is correctly calibrated, the reading should be 75 percent humidity.
  5. If your hygrometer is not reading the correct number, do not fret, simply use the manual dial to adjust your meter to 75 percent.
  6. Mission successful!

Following these simple steps is an easy way to calibrate your analog hygrometer, but there is an even simpler solution, purchase a calibrated digital hygrometer, they already come calibrated!

Digital hygrometers are a more reliable measurement tool than analog hygrometers because they have a 5%RH percent accuracy compared to the 10%RH percent accuracy of analog hygrometers.

What measures humidity?

In simple terms, a hygrometer is a device that uses a range of different variables to measure the humidity of the air, the first rough hygrometer being invented by Leonardo da Vinci in 1480. For example, some hygrometers use the current temperature and an electric current monitor to accurately calculate the current humidity. What instruments measure humidity?

There are two types of devices that can read relative humidity:


1. Analog Hygrometers: This type of hygrometer is the cruder of the two. Analog hygrometers use condensation-sensitive components to read the surrounding humidity and have dial-like reading mechanism. Although most come already calibrated, some analog hygrometers must be hand calibrated periodically and react poorly to quick changes in weather. Analog hygrometers can be used to measure both indoor and outdoor temperatures and are durable, but only read the relative humidity with an accuracy of 10%RH. 2. Digital Hygrometers: Compared to analog hygrometers, digital hygrometers provide a more competitive and futuristic reading. Digital hygrometers use electric current monitors to read moisture levels. Digital hygrometers can range from simple indoor humidity readers to durable outdoor systems and can provide additional information such as the high and low humidity of the day as well as optimal comfort levels. What does a hygrometer measure?


Hygrometers are valuable tools for many different reasons and use. If you are sick and have a dry cough, or have dry skin it may be because the air in your home or room is particularly dry. Baked Fish Temperature 

One of the most difficult meats to cook properly is fish. Why? Because you must be so precise to get the best cook, as the USDA only recommends one safe cooking temperature for a correctly cooked fish. What does this mean? This means that fish cannot be cooked at different doneness levels, there is no medium rare for fish. Simply put there is undercooked, cooked and overcooked. Internal Temperature of Beef 

When cooking beef, it's critical that you get the steak temperature exactly how you want it. Why? Because beef is one of the most diverse meats when cooking, as it can be cooked at a large range of “doneness” levels. Beef can be safely cooked and consumed at 5 different doneness levels ranging from 125ºF/52ºC at its lowest to 165ºF/74ºC at its highest. The perfect internal temperature of your beef is key to getting the correct doneness for you or your guest. How are you going to achieve this perfect cook? With the help of one of our ThermoPro food thermometers of course. Below we will walk through the 5 different levels of beef cooking temps and what you can expect from these different cook and we will also provide the recommended USDA steak doneness level. 

Rare Temp

Cooking your beef to a doneness level of Rare requires the internal temperature to be 125ºF/52ºC, which is considered the lowest safe temperature you can cook your beef to without endangering your health and others.This doneness level will give you a seared outside and a red, bloody inside. It is important to note that when cooking to a rare doneness level, the entire inside is not to be red, but around 75% of the inside should remain blood red. The taste should be tender and extremely juicy.

Medium Rare Temp

A medium rare steak temp should be done at 140ºF/60ºC. This cook is similar to a rare cook, as it will still have a reddish pink inside and can still be bloody and juicy. The main difference is that the outer layers of meat will be more colored and cooked compared to a cooler cook. Still expect a seared outside with this cook. The taste should result in a juicy and tender piece of beef.

Medium Temp

Medium is the most common cook and the recommended USDA temperature as it is the midway point between rare and well done. To achieve a medium steak temp, you will want to have the internal temperature of your beef at 150ºF/66ºC. Expect the inside of your meat to still have a pink look, but still be colored as the meat has been cooked at a higher temperature. A medium doneness level is a good choice if you are cooking for someone who cannot make up their mind on what cook they prefer. The taste should result in a tougher texture and should be slightly less juicy.

Medium Well Temp

As we begin to cook at higher temperatures, our doneness level colors will change. Expect a medium well done cook if you are cooking at 160ºF/71ºC. With this doneness level, you can expect an almost fully cooked brownish inside with a slight pink tinge. This doneness level still provides the juiciness of a  medium cook with a more fully colored inside. This taste will be quite chewy and not much moisture left inside the meat.

Well Done Temp

Our final doneness level is one which is cooked at the highest temperature. To achieve a well done doneness level, you will want to cook your beef to an internal temperature of 165ºF/74ºC for the best results. Expect the inside of your meat to be fully brown and to be very colored as the meat has been cooked to its full taste potential. Best for those who do not like seeing a bloody cook! This will provide an almost leathery taste which some people prefer.

Conclusion

The USDA gives us guidelines on safe eating temperatures when preparing our food, and it is advised that we follow them. Beef is a diverse meat that can be cooked between 125ºF/52ºC and 165ºF/74ºC, with a number of different “doneness” levels. Each level is only a few digress different but while cooking you want to be precise as possible as every degree counts! Good luck!
